The first thing that most people ask when they are looking at home security systems is do they really need one. In most cases the answer to that is yes. There are lots of good reasons to get a home security system. The most obvious is to keep you and your family safe. Having a security system will also give you peace of mind and it will help to reduce you home owners insurance. There are no shortage of reasons to have a security system so really everybody should have one installed.
The next question obviously becomes what kind of system should you have installed. You can get systems that range from noting more than a simple camera to a hugely sophisticated system that will make it nearly impossible for somebody to break into your home. You are probably going to want to go somewhere in between the two extremes. In large part the system that you get is going to depend on what kind of budget you have. The cost of a system can vary enormously. That being said just because you can afford an elaborate system doesn't mean that you need one. In most cases the simpler approach is best.
The most common security device is a camera; these are installed in almost all systems. There are quite a few decisions that you are going to have to make when you are choosing cameras. You are going to have to think about what kind of cameras you need, how many you need, where you plan to put them and how you plan to monitor them. The decisions that you make in this respect will largely determine everything else when it comes to your security system.
The next thing that you are going to have to think about is what, if any sensors, do you want to install with your system. Most people go with magnetic sensors at a minimum so that they know when a door or window has been opened. It is also a good idea to include a chemical sensor to detect carbon monoxide leaks which are actually more likely than having your house broken into. There are some people who include motion detectors as part of their system but most people find them to be more of a hassle than they are worth. The choice is up to you whether you install them.
One of the biggest issues that you will need to think about is whether you are going to install these yourself or have a security company do it for you. You can get the cameras and the sensors that you need at your local hardware store and in most cases they can be installed fairly easily. However if you have a security company do it you can have your system monitored remotely. This will make your system more effective but it will also cost you a monthly fee for the service.
